Dunes is a 13th
century medieval village surrounded by lush rolling hills and
many beautiful towns and villages.
Nearby are several interesting villages. Auvillar is one of
France's most beautiful overlooking the valley of Garonne with
spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. Valence
d'Agen has
a special history with an ancient Lavoir and has a weekly
market. Moissac is a town famous for the church with its
impressive cloisters.
Nerac is only 25 miles away lying on the Baise river and the
location for the film 'Chocolat'. The castle at Goudourville is
also well worth a visit.
The city of Toulouse known as 'La Ville Rose' due to
many of its buildings being constructed from the local pink
brick. The city has a lovely shopping centre and very impressive
main square called the 'La Place du Capitole' which is the centre of
the original Bastide. Market days are not to be missed with the
crowds, the smells and the sheer variety of produce!
The Millau Bridge is currently the highest and longest viaduct
in the world and one of the most impressive feats of engineering
to be found in Europe and although 3 hours away by car is well
worth a visit.
The town of Carcassonne is just a couple of hours away where the
Old City is enclosed within a medieval fortress. You can amble
along the cobbled streets and enjoy a meal at one of the many
restaurants in the area.
The Canal du Midi which joins the Atlantic to the
Mediterranean and adjoining canals provide an interesting and
enjoyable tourist attraction with boats being available to hire.
It is also one of the locations used for Rick Steins book 'The
French Odyssey'.
There are a multitude of places to see and visit in this area of
France and it is certainly considered one of the most
attractive.
